I have been meaning to read this for a while, and it didn't disappoint. Have your highlighter ready for some prose that's just as applicable today as during the times of the American Revolution. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Martie Canterberry -- A Strong Case Against Government Interference and "Group Think" : Mill was an atheist and decidedly anti-Christian, and I state this for those who need to take this into account before reading an essay on world view. Despite this fact, John Stuart Mill would be most displeased with how Christians and religious conservatives are being vilified these days. He is definitely NOT in favor of shutting down dissenting opinions or open discussions, and the book has some potent quotes that could be applied to today's "politically correct" shenanigans. He makes a very strong case against the type of soft tyranny we are seeing today with regard to prevailing opinions on controversial topics. He clearly states that protection from government tyranny is not enough; there is also the tyranny of popular opinion toward unpopular opinion, and that people should be protected from this as well. Timely and relevant. Warning: the book is short, but it is not an "easy read." Well worth it nonetheless. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2014 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Tom -- Do not buy this version, or any other text printed by amazon. : I haven't read the text yet, but I do not intend to due to my bad experience of buying amazon printed texts previously. The text in these prints is of course readable, and the whole initial text by Mill is likely present, but the presentation is incredibly shabby- inconsistent formatting and use of style, makes it an annoying book to read. And more frustratingly, these minor defects that appear throughout the amazon printed texts could easily be fixed- the company clearly does not care and wants to make a quick buck of popular texts that aren't copyrighted... Furthermore, the cover is a clear ripoff of the penguin classics series- they were clearly trying to fool people into thinking that this product is of that superior publisher. - 2.0 out of 5 stars from CM -- Review of the Publishing: NOT a review of Mill himself - POOR QUALITY PUBLISHING : The book is cheap, so if you are purely looking for a copy of Mill's writing for a cheap price then this is good, but the quality of the publishing is absolutely abysmal. It looks like it was done on Microsoft Word then bound together in a back office. The margins are comically small, and it is far from a pleasure to the eye.
