Significantly smaller than the other yaks in her herd, Gertie struggles to do most of the things the others can do. Though Gertie’s mother tries to convince her that big things are in Gertie’s future, Gertie herself is not so sure. One day, the herd seeks Gertie’s assistance to rescue an even smaller yak from a precarious perch on the mountainside. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Carla the Reader -- Being small but mighty, a cute story with a great message. : This was an adorable picture book that my grandchildren and I loved. This is a story about Gertie, a small yak, who feels like she can't do anything because she is so small. Of course the lesson is that being small doesn't mean you can't do anything, in fact, there are things only little ones can do. I loved the illustrations in this book. Over the years, there have been a lot of stories about little guys doing great things, think The Littlest Engine. What I loved about this one was the choice of a yak as well as the snowy setting, perfect as we head into the winter. The rhyming text had a great cadence which made this one a great read aloud. My grandkids enjoyed the story and the eye catching, cartoonish illustrations. One they asked to be read again, that means it was a hit. We also had a short discussion after about Gertie and being small. One I definitely recommend to schools, families and public libraries. I was gifted a copy of this book upon request. I loved the rhyming scheme and text, which makes it a really fun read-aloud book. Gertie finally realizes that being small can have its own advantages. Not only was the rhyme perfect, but the story filled me and my son up with so much hope and goodness. This gorgeous rhyming story from Lu Fraser (with blissful artwork from Kate Hindley) celebrates little-ness, and urges the child reader not to be in too much of a rush to grow up! There’s just something immediately endearing about a tiny yak and this is beautifully built on by the illustrator’s brilliant way of showing the yaks wearing woolly hats and snug cloaks — what’s not to love? The story has a super message for little ones, and with its stunning illustrations and adorable text, this is a book I am sure I will be reading over and over again.
